Commissioning
When you’re nearing the end of a large installation project there is a tendency to relax as the “Finish Line” begins to become a reality. Whether it is a single motor, an entire plant or a Service Entrance Section chances are you’ve spent a lot of money and effort getting to this point. Employees are chomping at the bit, the shareholders are figuratively tapping their foot, and customers are nervous. The last bolt gets tightened, the safety devices are cleared and you hit “Start”. Then there’s a failure and the finger-pointing begins. Commissioning is a process whereby a knowledgeable 3rd Party systemically tests and evaluates the equipment and installation to absolutely ensure it will function as expected and designed. Commissioning (Cx) effort needs to be proportional to the criticality of the equipment. Cx can be involved from the start of the project, or brought in near the end. Cx Agents provide an objective quality control function that represents the Owner’s interest. Google Bathtub Curve or Equipment Infant Mortality and you will see that it is not unusual for a large percentage of failures to occur at or near start up.
C3 engineering can help support your commissioning plan by developing procedural scrips that follow manufacturer’s guidelines and project specifications to ensure that every piece of equipment commissioned will work the way it was engineered and intended to do. Hiring us to be your owner representative can insure that you will get what you pay for and the equipment will not fail on when the lights turn on.
